ARTHUR TRESS: Early Work
October 19 - November 10, 2001
Opening Reception: Friday, October 19, 2001 from 6 - 8 PM

Dallas, TX -- Arthur Tress: Early Work features a first time photography exhibition by this artist in the Dallas area. Approximately 25 photographs will be shown in this solo exhibition at Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery.

Arthur Tress's prolific career spans over 40 years. He has become one of the most influential photographers of the 1960-70's era. This year he was honored with a retrospective exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. His recent book, Arthur Tress: Fantastic Voyage, was a result of that exhibition.

The exhibition in Dallas will focus on the artist's earlier works. Photographs from his series: Dream Collector and Theater of the Mind will figure prominently. This exhibit includes his signature images: "Bride and Groom" and "Flood Dream", both from 1971. Also included is the humorous "Charlotte Olds and Rooster", 1975, which shows an elderly woman seated on a bed staring at a rooster on the floor. Tress's dark humor is reflected in the image, "Girl with Dunce's Cap", 1972--which reveals a school room with an isolated girl in the foreground wearing a dunce cap covering her entire head. All photographs reflect the artist's surrealist point of view, most likely evolved from his childhood spent in Brooklyn, NY where he often visited the Coney Island freak shows and explored dilapidated buildings in the vicinity. Tress studied art at Bard College in New York and then traveled in Europe for 6 years, returning to New York to further pursue a career in art.

Several monographs have been published on his work including:
Arthur Tress: The Dream Collector, 1972; Shadow. A novel in Photographs, 1975; Theater of the Mind, 1976; Arthur Tress: The Teapot Opera, 1986. Permanent collections his photographs can be found include: Museum of Modern Art, NY, NY; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, NY; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX.

FLAG
A Selection of Photographs featuring the American Flag
Small Gallery
October 19 - November 10, 2001

In addition to the Arthur Tress: Early Work exhibition at Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery, we are adding a small exhibition of photographs with American flags featured within the image.

Burt Finger, one of the owners of Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery, was feeling patriotic. He wanted to re-enlist in the Army, but alas, his age was a problem (too old). Not being one to be discouraged, he decided to curate an exhibition of images of the American Flag that have been hidden in the gallery's archive. It was surprising what he found.

Come for a salute to Old Glory!

Artists included in this exhibition:
John Albok
Jack Delano
Don Donaghy
William Greiner
