CHRIS VERENE

September 12 - October 11, 2003
Opening Reception : Friday, September 12, 2003, 6 - 8 PM

Photographs from Chris Verene’s ongoing photo essay of Galesburg, Illinois, his place of birth, will be featured in this solo exhibition. These color photographs from the past sixteen years document family and friends in a small railroad community in the Midwest. Some of these images are upbeat, some disturbing, but all reflect a community that exists close to this artist’s heart.

Verene’s monograph, Chris Verene, features many of the photographs that will be exhibited. Twin Palms Publishers released the book in 2000. This will be the first time his work will be exhibited in this area.

Photographs from his Camera Club series will be exhibited in the small gallery. This photographic essay was represented in the 2000 Whitney Biennial. Camera Club involved a deceitful adventure with middle-aged male amateur photographers posing as ‘professionals’ seeking out young female nudes as their subjects. Verene captures this lurid activity while posing as one of the Camera Club members. This artist also does performance art, featuring characters from The Self-Esteem Salon, The Baptism Series, and Vereni, ¡Escapista!.

Museum collections that include Verene’s work are: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, The High Museum of Art, Atlanta and many others.

Chris Verene is also the recent (2002-2003) recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Grant for full support, the first photographer to ever receive this honor. He received a BA from Emory University and a M.F.A. from Georgia State University. Chris Verene is also a member of the indie rock band, Cordero that recently toured with Los Lobos.

Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery will host an artist reception on Friday, September 12, 2003 from 6 – 8 PM. Chris Verene will speak at The Modern Art Museum of Ft. Worth on September 16th at 7 PM. DADA Gallery Walk: Saturday, September 20, 2003 from 12 – 8 PM.
