MICHAEL KENNA

October 17 - November 29, 2003
Opening Reception : October 17 , 2003, 6 - 8 PM

Photographs from Michael Kenna’s Japan series will debut in Dallas at Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery this October. The book, Japan, published by Nazraeli Press, has already sold out in the 1st edition (the release date was early 2003). Many of the photographs featured in this exhibition are published in this book.

This is Kenna’s second solo exhibition at Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery. Japan is a landscape that seems perfect for Kenna. His imagery is painted with an eastern sensibility, a serene, minimalist style. These landscapes include views of the sea, mountains and small islands of Japan. Fishing nets, poles with birds, shrines, trees, clouds, harbor walls, rocks are all subjects of these tranquil, meditative scenes.

Michael Kenna (b. 1953, Widnes, Lancashire, England) studied at the Upholland College and Banbury School of Art. He graduated from the London College of Printing, H.N.D., 1976, with distinction. Photographers all over the world find that Kenna’s prints represent the zenith of the art of printing photography. Kenna currently lives in San Francisco, CA.

Kenna has had many solo exhibitions around the world and is in many museum collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. In 2000, Kenna received the award of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Government.

There will be an artist lecture open to the public at SMU (Southern Methodist University) Thursday, October 16th at 7:30 PM. The location is Owens Art Center, O’Donnell Lecture Hall, Rm. 2130 (admission is free).
