INAUGURAL EXHIBITION
NEW LOCATION
PDNB Gallery (Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery) will open September 16th in their new, spacious gallery! The new address will be 1202 Dragon Street, Suite 103, in the Design District. This inaugural exhibition will celebrate the new location as well as kick off the new season . September 16th will also be the annual DADA Fall Gallery Walk (Dallas Art Dealers Association).
Artists featured in this inaugural exhibition will be Stuart Allen, a new artist from Texas in our stable, Keith Carter, Bill Owens and John Albok.
Stuart Allen's work is minimal. Each photograph represents the fundamental core of digital photography. The artist takes a digital snapshot of a seascape, a person's eye, or blood etc. Then he mines pixels from that snapshot, selects them and blows them up. The shape of the pixel is square, so the resulting image is a square that contains a group of square pixels. Each square varies in tone very slightly. It becomes a minimal square that pays homage to Joseph Albers, where color becomes the subject.
Photographs from Bill Owens Working series will be exhibited for the first time. A new edition of his 1977 book, Working (I Do It For the Money), will be released in the near future. The Guggenheim Grant he was awarded in the 1970's funded this photographic project. These images frame people in their work environment for example, a chiropractor working on a woman's neck in his clinic with the standard medical illustrations hanging on the wall in the background displaying the spine. People in their offices with stacks of papers and old rotary phones, a pizza pie maker flipping dough in the air.
New work by the famous Texas artist, Keith Carter, will be exhibited. Keith has been an important part of PDNB's history. So it is fitting to celebrate our inaugural show in the new space with his new photographs.
PDNB Gallery has designated an enclosed gallery space the John Albok Gallery, in memory of this significant New York artist (1894-1982). Vintage photographs of New York by John Albok will be exhibited in this gallery. These superb 1930's and 1940's images include scenes from Harlem, the New York World's Fair, Rockefeller Center and Central Park.
